Health Heroes and The Strength Within

Have you heard about Health Heroes? It’s an Australian Government initiative to encourageAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to consider a career in health and is part of their commitment to close the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

It’s a great idea with first hand stories from young people working in health, tools to find out what kind of job would be right for you and information on the help available and training you will need to pursue your career.

The RFDS has it’s very own health heroes, working in communities in QLD. Since 2006, the RFDS Queensland Section has been working with Cape York communities to build their capacity to respond to social and emotional well-being issues by providing employment and training opportunities.

The Strength Within is a series of videos available on the RFDS Youtube Channel with stories of a community member in Coen, Mossman Gorge and Pormpuraaw who has completed Certificate IV education and job training with the Royal Flying Doctor Capacity Building Unit in Cairns.

Samuel Bong, Marilyn Kepple and Josh Williams are just three of the people who have gone through the program and their stories show how this journey of learning can change not only their lives, but the lives of the people in their communities.

Truly inspiring stuff!
