Dental initiative check up

Local Menindee lads line up for mouthguards

The great new dental initiative we told you about in an earlier post – free mouthguards in team colours – encouraged 80 children to get their teeth checked, most from Menindee in far northern NSW. It was a wonderful start to an excellent programme and we hope to continue it next year.

Insufficient dental care is one of the most serious issues in remote health, with long term repercussions, especially for children. Flying Doctor dental clinics are usually full and we are now doing more recalls instead of emergency appointments. That’s good news. It means more people are coming forward for treatment.

Recent donations have made it possible to begin to stock clinics such as Tilpa, Hungerford and Louth with basic equipment, like handpieces and extraction forceps. It means we spend less time packing, there’s less weight to carry on the aircraft, which means less fuel…and it’s better for all our aging backs and shoulders!
